Ex-Tarantino Producer Brought on Board by Activision
Author: S.A.

Far to often, especially given how beautiful graphics have gotten in the present, video gaming can feel like a movie adventure. The cut scenes are often beautifully rendered, and the emotional grief you see characters go through often touches you deep down. However, we as gamers are always removed from that experience the second we have to gain control of our character again and take responsibility for his actions in their graphical world. Often I find this responsibility daunting, and I truly wish sometimes to see how the developers wished this game would play out as if the featured game were a movie.

I might be getting that chance in the near future.

Not to long ago Activision Blizzard stepped into the realm of “video game filming”. That’s right dear readers, the gaming giant launched its own film and TV studio in the attempt to develop content that is based on its own video game franchises. This endeavour I personally find exciting because if it is succesful, it will encourage other gaming company’s to follow in its steps. Thus creating a whole new realm of television that I feel the gaming community as a whole has been waiting for years to see produced.

Nerds never say die after all.

Activision has proven its seriousness by bringing on a new co-president for this venture, and a notable one at that in the film community. Stacey Sher, a film producer who has worked on various past movie projects with Quentin Tarantino has been brought on, and has been in the movie production game for quite sometime. This is done by Activision in the hopes that Stacey will help their young organization take flight.

They also have another recognizable individual at their department, that being the studios other co-president, former Disney exec Nick van Dyk. The Disney exec has stated that he believes this venture to have a “unique advantage,” and “a library of world-class intellectual property that includes some of the largest franchises which have not yet been developed in film and television.” For those of us to lazy to read through the writing, what this essentially means is that this endeavour has a lot of untapped potential. The studio is currently planning a television show based around the children’s video game Skylanders, as well as a series on a world recognizable franchise Call of Duty.

The company has hopes to follow in Disney and Marvels footsteps, turning the love of fans into a million dollar empire. However, they are facing an upwards struggle in this market, as films based on video games don’t have the best track record. You can look no further than the Prince of Persia movie adaption to see how well such ventures fair in the market. That said, let’s hold out hope for a better tomorrow.
