On Baby Jay, the cuteness factor on Comic Book Men went through the roof as Jason Mewes passed by the Stash with his baby daughter. Nostalgia also reined supreme this week as a customer brought in some vintage DC and Marvel 7-11 comic book Slurpee cups from the mid 70’s.

Brain freezes, copious amounts of sugar and the rare characters featured on some of the cups brought back fond memories for the boys. During the podcast segment, Walt noted how these cups were the beginning of the superhero merchandising trend that we now take for granted. Also noted was how the images on the cups reflected the differences in the two publishing giants.

When Jay came into the store with his baby daughter, Logan the superhero chatter and deal making came to a halt. Babies are hard to resist and little Logan captured everyone’s attention. Since the gang was aware that Jason was going to stop by, they decided to throw him a superhero/comic book themed baby shower. Talk soon turned to how great it was to see Jay with his daughter and how much of a surprise it was to see him now as a dad.

Another customer came in with a request to take a closer look at an 18″ Leather Face collectible figure. The figure by McFarlane Toys was released in 2001 as part of the Movie Maniacs line. The vintage collectible of the week was a Mego Batcave playset, complete with a working Bat Signal. Reaction to the playset was divided to say the least. While Mike and Walt were impressed with seeing a rare toy from their childhood, Ming and Bryan were less than impressed.

Babies, vintage collectibles and action figures made Baby Jay a microcosm of why comics and pop culture are so important. The toys and comics that fascinated us as kids are now fond memories of a time gone by as well as a legacy that can be passed on to the next generation.
