Buoyed by the positive buzz generated by new trailers for Wonder Woman and Justice League during San Diego Comic Con a few weeks ago, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. will look toward a motley band of villains to continue the wave of good vibes after the disappointing Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Based on the comic book by John Ostrander, Suicide Squad focuses on a government led covert team of super villains who’ve been enlisted to carry out black ops missions in a bid to clear their names and to save the Earth from an unknown threat. Led by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) the team consists of the Joker (Jared Leto), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Deadshot (Will Smith), Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), El Diablo (Jay Hernandez), Slipknot (Adam Beach) and Killer Croc (Adewele Akinnuoye-Agbaje). Ben Affleck will also make an appearance as Batman to help connect the film to the DC cinematic universe.
Written and directed by David Ayer (Training Day, Fury), Suicide Squad has a lot riding on it. Its success can do a lot to ease some of the discomfort caused by Batman v Superman and would create a bridge of good faith to the next instalment in DC’s big screen universe, 2017’s Wonder Woman. If it turns out to be another critical disappointment it could go a long way to altering the plans already in place for films such as Justice League, The Flash and Cyborg. Either way look for Margot Robbie’s star to shine even brighter once her rendition of Harley Quinn hits the silver screen.
