An open comic book is sitting on a plain white surface. The pages are blurry and feature black-and-white graphics.

Two of the greatest threats that can wreak havoc on your prized comics can exist in your home: humidity and poor air quality. It’s possible to shield your comics from these damaging components. With the following tips, you can stop humidity and air threats from ruining your comics and keep them in excellent condition.

Use Archival-Quality Storage Materials

The first defense against humidity and pollutants is proper storage. Invest in acid-free backing boards and archival-quality bags.

Standard comic bags might seem like enough, but they can trap moisture over time. Archival materials, made from polypropylene or mylar, are durable and resist damage caused by humidity.

For added protection, utilize comic book storage boxes designed for long-term keeping. These boxes shield the collection from external pollutants and environmental changes.

Control Indoor Humidity

Maintaining the right humidity level is key to avoiding warping and mold growth. Balanced humidity levels in your home matter because just as high humidity can make wood warp, it can make pages stick together. Conversely, low humidity can cause them to become brittle.

Aim to keep the relative humidity in the storage area between 40 and 60 percent. A dehumidifier can work wonders if you live in a humid environment.

Avoid Direct Airflow

Airborne pollutants, dust, and even changing air pressures can slowly damage your comics. Avoid storing them near vents, windows, or anywhere with direct airflow, as moving air can carry moisture. It can also carry small particles that might accumulate and tarnish your comics.

Instead, create a storage area in a stable location with limited exposure to outside air. Sealing the doors and windows can also help reduce pollutants from entering the space.

Invest in an Air Purifier

If air quality is a concern, consider placing an air purifier near the comic storage area. Look for purifiers with HEPA filters, as they effectively capture mold spores, dust, and other pollutants that could ruin your collection’s quality.

Inspect Your Collection Regularly

Taking the time to inspect your comics periodically is key to stopping humidity and air threats from ruining your comics. Prevent long-term damage by looking for signs of mold, foxing, or fading and address these issues promptly.

Rotate comics in storage to reduce the risk of uneven wear and ensure they all stay in optimal condition. An ounce of prevention goes a long way in making sure your favorite stories can stay fresh and timeless for generations of readers.
