Preacher 306 – Les Enfants du Sang

Going to Hell and back isn’t all is cracked up to be apparently as Eugene questions his purpose now that he’s back on terra firma. He soon finds his way into an orphanage and reasons that God must have some purpose for him since he’s still alive after all that he’s been through. Eugene’s stay is short however when he finds out that he’s been adopted by none other than the Saint of Killers. Some guys just can’t catch a break.

There’s more than meets the eye – or gullet for that matter – where Les Enfants du Sang are concerned. While they initially come off as vampire fanboys and fangirls with exquisite taste in goth attire their leader proves that they aren’t neccessarily to be taken lightly. A weary and jaded Cassidy has little time for them until he’s given a taste of what their leader, Eccarius can do.

Tulip’s tenuous grip on life continues to rely on Gran’ma L’Angelle’s health. Jesse, Jody and T.C. hatch a plan to save them both with a super-sized dose of souls to keep his grandmother chugging along for a while. Les Enfants du Sang then morphs into a Preacheresque version of Oceans 11 where an elaborate heist is the order of the day. Petting zoos, a half naked T.C., and saliva triggered alarms are just part of the bizarre elements that go into keeping Gran’ma L’Angelle alive.

The Allfather, while visually played for laughs, is a formidable foe – especially when he plays the heavy. Even Herr Starr gets a little shaky in his presence especially when he shows up shows up unexpectedly in his office. The Allfather even delivers the line of the episode when he comments on the reason why Starr has been sporting all of the fancy hats the past few weeks.

Les Enfants du Sang offers up a couple of twists and another callback to Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life. However, under all of the comic happenings in the episode there’s some dark foreshadowing including talk of an apocalypse. The likelihood of that outcome is low though but how things play out will be where the fun lies. It won’t surprise anyone if the bonds of loyalty get tested in several circles over the next few episodes as various characters are revving up their scheme games to new levels.
